Hydrometeorological features of the Caspian Sea

Physical-geographical characteristics of the Caspian Sea: Caspian Sea is the largest landlocked water basin on Earth. Nearly 45% of the whole lake waters of the world are accumulated in the Caspian Sea which is isolated from the world ocean.

Caspian Sea is located in the border area of continents of Europe and Asia in the area limited by 45°07 and 36°33' northern latitude, and 46°43' and 54° 30' eastern longitude coordinates. Currently the Caspian Sea is 27.00 m below ocean level (2007 EST).

The length of the sea is 1200 km through the meridian, average width is 325 km, area is 392.000 square km, water capacity is 79.000 cubic km, average depth is 207 m and the deepest point is 1025 m.

The Caspian Sea is divided into three parts according to physical-geographical, depth relief and morphological features of its coasts: Northern, Middle, and Southern Caspian. The Caspian Sea has characteristics both to seas (vast measures, hydrometeorological features, chemical content of its water and etc.), and lakes (its being unconnected with oceans and location in 1000 kilometers distance off them (endorheic basin) and etc.). Caspian Sea has 5 littoral countries: Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Russian Federation, and Republic of Turkmenistan. Length of coastline among the littoral countries (in the level rate of 27.00 m BS) is as follows: Azerbaijan – 850 km, Kazakhstan – 2350 km, Iran – 900 km, Russia – 1000 km, Turkmenistan – 1200 km. 50 islands exist in the Caspian Sea with the total area of 2.000 square km.
