Information about Mnemiopsis Leidyi

Registration by scientists of shifting (invasion) of Mnemiopsis leidyi to inner southern seas (Black, Azov, and then to Caspian) was much later than their real date of entry into ecosystems of these seas. Revealing of Mnemiopsis (leidyi) first time in Black Sea comes to 1982 (Pereladov, 1988), as a specie it was registered in 1986 (Zaitsev et al., 1988).

First information about in the Caspian Sea was provided in 1996 by fishers and it was related with catching of it specie in their nets. But this specie was registered in 1999- by specialists of Caspian SRFII during the expedition carried out at Turkmenistan coats (Zaitsev, 2001). By conclusion the ecosystem of Black and Azov seas is under influence of Mnemiopsis leidyi over 20 years and the Caspian Sea is over 10 years.
As a result of many-years’ researches carried out in Black and Azov Seas the influence of   Mnemiopsis leidyi on all ecosystems of these seas, particularly on pelagian and benthos was revealed (Volovik, 2004).
The conducted  researches shown that in connection with intensive feeding of Mnemiopsis leidyi with zooplanktons in Black sea the biomass of zooplanktons was reduced for 23-30 times.
Mnemiopsis, having significant influence on fauna of invertebrates in the bottom of sea eats its pelagial larvae. It was calculated that at result of eating of pelagial larvae of benthos organism by mnemiopsis the biomass of benthos organisms gets reduced for 30% (Volovik et al., 1993). So, it has a negative impact on feeding condition of sturgeon, sprats, kutum and other fish with commercial importance in the Caspian Sea, formation of its resources, as well as its quantity.
In this connection since 2000 the staff of AzerFRI carries out research works within framework of monitoring on study of number of Mnemiopsis, its biomass and spreading in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

Azerbaijan Fisheries Research Institute, as well as relevant bodies from Russian Federation, Republic of Kazakhstan and Islamic Republic of Iran had prepared the program of measures for research of possibilities of introduction of Beroye (Beroe Ovata) combed for fighting with strange specie like Mnemiopsis (Mnemiopsis Leydi). According to program the marine researches are conducted by Caspian littoral states in connection with Mnemiopsis. At possible introduction conditions of Beroye Ovata (combed) the modeling of ecosystem, conduction of monitoring on combed organisms at ballast waters in ship tankers and other measures were planned.
