General area of the territory of the Azerbaijan Republic is 8.6 million hectares. General area of the land of forest fond of Azerbaijan is 1.214 million hectares. From this the forest covered area consisting of 1,021 million hectares is the 11,8% of the general territory. 95% of our forests spread in upland and foothills territories,the remainder 5% mostly in the valleys of river, run in plain territories. Our forests fulfill pure safety functions to the spread of territories. Therefore it incuded on the first group forests.
In the countries 20-25% of territory covered by forest it meets less comparing with the boggy and salt-ridden lands to water lack,degradation and erosion of the condition of the unstable climate. Therefore the forests in our Republic is not enough to preserve the ecological balance,that is why our forests  should be seriously guarded and protected and it's areas must be raised. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has done considerable expedient works in this province in the last years.
During 2010 the forest restoration  10550 ha against 10696 ha area and the forest sowing 3500 ha against 3521 ha area, in the 7175 aid arrangement for the natural restoration are held by the authorized bodies of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. 138352 kg of grain was purveyed.
          In the seeding area 24,3 thousand stuck sowing materials consisting of various types of trees and shrub breeds werecutivated.The cultivated sowing materials were used not only previding the forest sowing, reparing,but also for the edge of the planting og greenery in the city and setllements,at the main automobile roads, along the river and pools. Therefore in 2010 10835,3 thousand stuck sowing materials were used in Baku  and in the suburbs of Baku by the authorised  bodies of theMinistry of Ecology and Natural Resourcesthe work is being continiues intensively in this area.
During 2010 year among enterprises about 37 thousand 640 m wood was produced. According to subsidiary economy 784 tone of natural grass, 9 tone garden fruit, 63 tone of garden pomegranate, 8 tone of hazelnut, 26 tone of nut, 3 tone of chestnut, 5 tone of feykhua, 8 tone of hazelnut, 5 tone of feykhua , ton of kiwi, 2077 kilogramme of honey were produced.
Protection of the forests has always been in the focus of the Ministry along with restoration of the forests and afforesting since the establishment of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. At present 1300 forest guarding workers are engaged in guarding and protecting of forests, that they fulfill operative supervision to the situation of guarding and protecting of forests. It is the result of effective policy provided by the Ministry that year after year reduction in the level of illegal destruction of the forests was achieved.
That is, if in 2003 volume of the illegal cutting activity in the forest 49 thousand  m³ then in  2010 this   indicator  reduced  to 31% and  was 34,9 thousand m³. Within 2010, 374 forest guarding workers have been implemented different discipline reproof measures for the recorded lawless cuttings. 295 affairs in the sum of 72748 manats have been sent to low enforcement agencies for taking corresponding measures to the low about the accused.
         In order to prevent fires in the forests a lot of activites are done.During 2010 year generally in the area of 49,97 ha forest the fire broke out but the fire was put out quickly,the forest area didn’t get serious harm.
A lot of work is being done for protecting forests and extending their areas.
