Total area of the Republic of Azerbaijan covers 8, 6 millions square meters. Total area of forest fund lands in Azerbaijan covers 1, 214 thousands ha. Forest covered area of the total area shown above takes 989, 4 thousands ha or 11, 4 %. Approximately 0, 12 ha forest land is allocated per capita that the figure is about 4 times (0, 48 ha) less than average number of forest land per capita in the world. The forests of Azerbaijan are considered to be in the first group for their importance. These forests have especially land protecting, resorting, health and other useful functions. Prevention of the catastrophes and other negative situations occurring due to the climate changes in the world is firstly related to improvement of forests and greenings, and reservation of present forests in the world.
Special state program on the climate changes was adopted in Azerbaijan as available in Azerbaijan, and the program proposes to extend the area of the forests of our Republic by optimal line- 20%.
Accordingly, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan signed Decree No 1152 dated February 18th of 2003 on development of “National Program” for restoration and extension of the forests in the Republic. In accordance with the said Decree, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Republic has prepared the National Program through involvement of government authorities, municipalities and scientific organizations.
The program was commenced executing in 2003, and completed in 2008. In accordance with the conclusions of the National Program, forest restoration works were performed in the area of 59184 ha during 2003-2008. Of these works, the works done in the area of 22855 ha include planting and sowing works. 213 millions crops were planted, and seeds of 1127 tones were supplied during the term of program.
After the National Program is completed, wide-scope greening activities were performed around the highways in the Republic and Absheron peninsula during 2009. So, 112 ha greenery was planted around Baku-Alat-Hajigabul highway, 196 ha greenery was planted around Zigh – H. Aliyev International Airport highway, and 56 ha greenery was planted around Azizbeyov Circle- H. Aliyev International Airport highway within the measures said above.
In addition, forest restoration activities were performed in 10792 ha area by the Forests Development Department in 2009. Of this, seeding was made in the area of 2632 of forests. Forest enterprises cultivated 26 millions crops and supplied seeds of 159 tones.
The greenery activities performed within the territory of Azerbaijan has been continued during 2010. In addition to the forest restorations implemented by the Forest Development Department, wide-scope of greenery activities are being implemented around Baku-Guba, Baku-Shemakhy, Baku-Gazakh and Baku-Astara highways, as well as Baku city and Absheron peninsula.
The developments made forward future development of the country under the president Ilham Aliyev make us be sure that there will be obtained the great achievements in the forest economy. Nature and its forests are the resources make human live, provided that human can reserve such resources. Forests are one of the valuable resources. Forests have important roles in economic development, environmental improvements and welfare improvement of population of any country. Forests have suitable effects on climate, atmosphere, rivers and other water basins, and they protect land from winds and erosions. For health purposes, forests may also be used in meeting cultural and esthetic demands of population. |
