Explores bowels in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, its geological age, depth structure, geological, geophysical, geochemical, structural features, minerals, geo-ecology, and optimum use methods of bowels. With this purpose the followings operate regarding steppe surrounding the whole territory of the Republic attached to National Geological Survey, as well as special expeditions network engaged in specific researches (Head Caucasus Geological Exploration Expedition, Small Caucasus Geological Exploration Expedition, Nakhchivan Geological Exploration Expedition, Absheron Gobustan and Caspian Geological Exploration Expedition, Operative Survey Expedition of Minerals, Geological Projection Expedition, Complex Hydrometeorology and Engineering Geology Expedition, Geological Monitoring Center, Rig Drilling Institution, Inter-branch Physical-Chemical Researches Center holding a cutting edge analytical basis), Minerals Scientific Research Institute engaged in exploration of geology, geo-economy, geo-ecology, and technological problems. In the period of independence the functions of service have been expanded, activities have been directed to the establishment of mineral resources basis which is considered inevitable for development of powerful economy of the country.
